Naphthalene is a white solid that is found naturally in fossil fuels. It has a strong, but not an especially unpleasant smell. The major products made from naphthalene are moth repellents. It is also used for making dyes, resins, leather, tanning agents, and the insecticide, carbaryl. It has a number of general laboratory uses and for the electron microscopy laboratory, it is the source of carbon for the highly successful line of OPC plasma coaters from Nippon Laser and Electronics Labs.
