Polystyrene Glass Microspheres

Uniform Polystyrene DVB Microspheres in Suspension

Styrene and divinylbenzene monomers polymerized in aqueous solution to form uniform spherical latex microspheres. Products are packaged ad aqueous suspensions in 15 ml vials. These spheres are known for their stability in the electron beam, are very durable, are nonionic and also, chemically inert. Polymer density 1.05g/ml; RI 1.59 @ 540nm. Use with confidence for all forms of microscope instrument calibration. Products are all NIST traceable.

The number of particles per unit of measure given on the website is all of the available information. These particles are sold as reference materials for size, not particle count, and the number of particles per unit of measure in a particular batch or lot number is not controlled or measured.

Polystyrene Latex Microspheres in Suspension

Styrene monomer polymerized into hard rigid latex spheres for ideal calibration aid at high magnifications. These latex spheres are known for their high level of inertness in the electron beam. Polymer density is 1.05g/ml; RI 1.59 @ 589.25nm. In addition to electron microscopy, use these microspheres with confidence for ultrafiltration research, light-scattering investigations, and instrument calibration procedures. Products are packaged as aqueous suspensions in 15 ml vials. NIST traceable.

Uniform Glass Microspheres

Borosilicate Glass Spheres, 2 to 20µm

Small borosilicate glass microspheres have fewer spherical imperfections and inclusions than other glass microspheres. They also have better mechanical and thermal stability. This series has been calibrated with NIST traceable methods of optical microscopy. They are packaged as one gram of dry spheres (as a free-flowing dry powder). The borosilicate spheres have a density of 2.50-2.55g/cm3 and an index of refraction of 1.56 @ 589nm (23° C). For those interested in magnetic susceptibility measurements, such data does not (to our knowledge) publicly exist, but we can report that the only magnetism would come from the low level iron impurities, and which are not more than 0.2% by weight of Fe2O3. Furthermore, these borosilicate glass spheres have low levels of trace element impurities.

Applications:

In addition to the numerous applications in microscopy, these borosilicate glass spheres can also be used for applications in flow tracing, filter checking, and instrument calibration.

Soda Lime Glass Microspheres, 30 to 2000µm

This series is used as NIST traceable calibrants or controls for instruments requiring a higher density and more contrast to incident radiation than that provided by the polymer microspheres. The microspheres are made of soda lime glass which has trace amounts of metallic elements. This makes them easily detectable by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) methods and improves their contrast and reflectivity in optical, ultrasonic and electron beam detection methods.

The spheres have been processed to remove most of the non-spherical and broken particles, assuring a high percentage of round spheres. They are packaged as one gram of dry spheres. The soda lime microspheres have a density of 2.4-2.5g/cm3 and an index of refraction of 1.51 @ 589nm. The softening temperature is 720°C and the dielectric constant is 7.3 @ 1 KHz and 20°C.
