Crushed separated crystals

Locality: Huamalias, Huanco, Peru
This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated barite crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Barite also has 3 perpendicular cleavages, accounting for the rectangular crystals and the cavities in the polished surface. This is the standard for the relatively rare element barium. The name refers to its heavy character.
