This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated molybdenite crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Molybdenite
has a layer type crystal structure which leads to flat, platy, flexible crystals. Here they are seen often edge on and curved. This is the only standard in the mineral set containing molybdenum. The similarities of the energies of
Mo Kα (2.29 keV) and S Kα (2.31 keV) means that WDS is desirable.
