This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated galena crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Galena is a useful
standard which contains a high concentration of lead, but the similarity of energies of Pb Mα (2.34 keV) and S Kα (2.31 keV) means that these two lines can only be resolved with a wavelength dispersive spectrometer. It is such a common
sulfide mineral, however, that it is an essential part of any standard set.
