The Quantifoil® Holey Carbon Films were originally developed to serve as unique support films for TEM studies, but it became clear to us at SPI Supplies that these same grids could be of enormous value for one trying to assess the daily performance of their own SEMs, both in terms of magnification as well as image quality.

The test samples are cheap enough, especially when purchased in bulk, to be used as calibrated test specimens. One can use them in essence as "calibrated grids" or "calibrated SEM mounts" since the size of a feature supported on the holey carbon film can be directly estimated from both the known hole size of the holes and the known spacing of the orthogonal rows of holes.

And for those with stage automation and automated SEMs, the regular array of holes makes it that much easier to process large numbers of samples, unattended, and without constant operator intervention.

Certification of the carbon films:
The hole size and hole spacing is validated with NIST traceable standard samples, however, the filmed grids are not certified, nor are they available in certified form.

How product is shipped:
Each grid is shipped in a small size gelatin capsule which then can be mounted on an SEM mount of your selection.
