SPI Supplies Brand Microporous Specimen Capsules, 30µm, Pack of 50
SPI Supplies® Brand Microporous Specimen Capsules, 30µm, Pack of 50:
These small, cylindrical containers protect fragile specimens during CPD, preserving three-dimensional form for later SEM observations. The sheltered environment also protects the fragile samples against the undesirable effects of turbulence. Both the capsule and its snug-fitting cap are solvent resistant (not harmed by alcohol, acetone, or chloroform). Capsules can also be used as convenient storage vessels for specimens under desiccation. The capsules measure 12mm in diameter by 11mm high and are available in three different pore sizes, the smallest being our newest addition at 30 µm. The inside diameter is 8mm, because of the roughly 2mm thickness of the wall.
The Microporous Capsule as a sample mount:
After the critical point drying of such small diameter samples as pollen, certain bacteria, and other small generally organic features, the capsule can be slit open with a GEM single edge razor blade and then mounted with the aid of SPI Double Sided Conductive Carbon Tape on a standard SEM mount, coated in either the SPI Module™ Sputter Coater or one of the OPC Osmium Coaters prior to being put into an SEM.
These capsules were designed to be used in the SPI-Dry™ Critical Point Dryer as well as any other critical point dryer with a large enough sample chamber to accommodate the outside dimensions of the capsules.
