SPI Supplies® Brand of Diamond Planchets

Product dimensions:

Diamond Planchet is 10mm diameter x 25 µm minimum thickness

Low Bremsstrahlung substrates for EDS and WDS analysis are highly desirable since they result in lower detection limits and greater sensitivity because of the superior signal-to-noise characteristics of the resulting spectra. Up until now, beryllium planchets and beryllium grids have been the preferred substrates of choice but because of safety policies in effect in some institutions with respect to the use of beryllium, there has been a natural interest in the use of diamond substrates which exhibit similarly low Bremsstrahlung radiation levels. Product is supplied with one side unpolished, exhibiting the crystallite texture of the diamond itself, and the other side is fine polished to a mirror finish.

And because of the high Bremsstrahlung background radiation detected for analyses done with the pyrolytic carbon planchets, the low background of the diamond planchet makes it a higher value-add product relative to the carbon planchets.

The unique product:

The SPI Supplies produced diamond planchets, to the naked eye, appear to be highly polished on one side but exhibit a rough texture (of the facets of literally millions of tiny diamond crystals) on the other side. We say "appear to be" because these planchets are not really polished, but they are grown on a very smooth surface, it is the same end result, but the process is different. We believe this is truly a "two-in-one" kind of product because for the researcher wanting to examine fine particles, then they have available the smooth side. But if the user, is for example, a forensic investigator and wants to "abrade off" some particles from a surface to look either at its composition, or to look for GSR, or another tell-tale sign of an event, the sample can in a sense be "sanded off" of the suspect surface, and collected onto the rough diamond surface which can then be carbon coated, such as in an SPI Module™ Carbon Coater and analyzed by EDS.

Cleaning the diamond planchets for reuse:

Nothing this expensive should be thrown away! Since it is diamond and resistant to almost anything, it can be cleaned with aggressive chemicals including strong acids and bases using a small laboratory scale ultrasonic bath.
