The FastCat™ Automated Tissue Processor for Electron Microscopy is a real productivity tool for any busy transmission electron microscopy (TEM) laboratory. It is microprocessor-based and has the capacity for storing 50 different protocols. Each custom protocol used by the user can be easily and conveniently loaded into the unit with the handheld (tamper resistant) programming box supplied with each FastCat.

Introduction:
The FastCat will help your laboratory reduce its labor costs and your technical people can be freed up to do other tasks. In most countries, with labor costs being what they are, if the laboratory is embedding three or more times per week, one just can not justify doing manual embedding. The use of the FastCat will actually lower your costs for doing the embedding. The FastCat using a time-tested robotics system to move the screen baskets of tissue from one vial to another, all with simultaneous agitation and with the ability to program the agitation shaking frequency and amplitude, and all at the desired temperature.

Features of the FastCat Automated Tissue Processor:
To avoid exposure to toxic vapors, each vial is loaded and sealed in an appropriate chemical fume hood, then removed in complete safety and loaded into the FastCat which can be safely operated in an open room (not taking up valuable hood space). Other commonly found automated tissue processors use a clam-shell top, and each vial is not separately capped. This means the unit must be operated under an appropriate chemical fume hood. Other tissue processors often times require exposure of toxic fumes to the operators because they are not working with a sealed vial system.

Economical use of liquid media:
The FastCat can be operated with fluid volumes ranging from only a few ml for one sample to 18 ml for a full load (up to 48 sample compartments).

Quality "on demand":
With the use of the FastCat, quality comparable to manual processing can be achieved and at the same time, staff time can be allocated for the performance of other tasks and the convenience of doing the required work on a more predictable and manageable schedule. Tissue samples can be loaded, the timer set, so that the tissue finishes at the desired time.

Removable "key" memory:
This permits the downloading of a different set of up to 50 protocols per memory "key", which looks like a key but it really is a sophisticated form of data storage of the protocols electronically. Different users can have their own key, each containing their own 50 specific protocols which could be unique to them. This approach is great for backup purposes since one can always download a backup on a second key to serve as backup in the event the first key is ever lost.

Operator protection and safety:
No other automated tissue processor uses a system of sealed vials for all reagents. With any other carousel style system, the operator is exposed to potentially hazardous vapors which is always going to be inevitable when one is changing vials, retrieving the "stack", etc. The FastCat vials can be loaded in a chemical fume hood and then taken the FastCat itself outside the hood which permits inspection, exchanging of vials, etc. all without exposure to the reagents being used in the system.

Sample handling system:
The FastCat uses traditional stack rings with stainless steel screen bottoms or the molded, one piece design with a center post. Both come with all the loading tools needed for easy and safe loading. These two sample basket systems allow processing of up to 48 samples per run, running a few large samples up to 5 mm x 5 mm or extremely fine samples depending on circumstances.
