Make sure you consider all your options!
The first commercial transmission electron microscope (TEM) dates back to the mid-1940's when what was then called RCA Corporation introduced the world's first commercial transmission electron microscope. We present this listing in alphabetical order, without any bias or endorsement. We do strongly believe that anyone, wherever they might be in the world considering the purchase of a TEM, should consider all of the commercially available TEMs made today. Most manufacturers offer instruments from entry level to cutting edge "high end" (and very costly) models. In most countries today there is a vibrant market for used TEMs and often times, for those with a limited budget, there is the possibility of purchasing a TEM with far greater capability than would otherwise be possible if they considered the purchase of a previously owned instrument.
While performance (on typical samples of interest to the purchaser) is important, we also believe the availability of factory service on a timely basis is equally important because if the TEM experiences long periods of down time, then it is not available to do work of any type. So it becomes important for any prospective purchaser to interview users of the proposed manufacturer to confirm what kind of service they receive. There can be large variations from country to country for the level of factory service provided by the same manufacturer. Indeed in large markets like the USA, there can even be large variations from one region of the country to the other.
If you plan to keep your TEM for a very long time, note that there are differences between the manufacturer in their policies as to how long going forward into the future they will continue to "support" their instruments with regard to service and spare parts. As we ourselves recently found out, this policy can vary in some cases from country to country.
What is our interest in all this? We accept no money or other consideration from any of the manufacturers listed. We do sell products to these manufacturers from time to time but in no way are such sales influencing the way they are being listed of described. All we hope for is that the information learned on this page will be helpful to anyone about to purchase a TEM and that if the information is found to be useful, we hope that they will consider the purchase of SPI Supplies products for the operation of their new laboratory.
