Apiezon® Greases
Shelf life considerations
We are often times asked about the shelf life of Apiezon greases.
When stored at ambient (moderate) room temperatures, in the original unopened packaging,
it is ten years.
However, most tubes don't remain unopened for ten years and once opened, the properties of
the grease will start to deteriorate, the rate of which depends on the storage temperature
and how often the tube is being opened during the time. All of the Apiezon greases
demonstrate strong "gettering" action, that is, they will very readily absorb air borne
organic vapors, especially other hydrocarbons. And the absorption of such volatile
organics will adversely affect the vapor pressure characteristics.
To extend the shelf life to the maximum outer limits, once opened, the tubes should be
recapped immediately. For most greases, if the cap is conscientiously replaced in that
way, the grease will maintain its characteristics for normal use.
Apiezon N grease is a special case. It was developed for use at low temperatures and
was formulated to resist microcracking at low temperatures.
If one is using a tube of Apiezon N and is experiencing microcracking, quite
possibly, a much more favorable result might be possible if a fresh tube of
Apiezon N was procured. The process of ageing seems to reduce noticeably the
resistance of Apiezon N grease to microcracking at low temperatures.
