SPI Vacuum Greases
Advantages of being silicone-free
For a vacuum grease, the addition of silicones, while improving some
properties, tends to degrade the creep properties, and to the point that
experiments can be contaminated. When used near optical surfaces, this
creep property can lead to the clouding of optical lenses and mirrors.
Where polymer coatings are involved, to be silicone free has other
advantages, since the slightest bit of silicone contamination can prevent
a good adhesive bond forming between the coating and the substrate.
While the manufacturers of silicone grease would possibly disagree, greases
formulated with silicones, when used in conjunction with moving parts,
actually is an inferior lubricant (relative to other alternatives) and is
never recommended as a critical lubricant, as damage or seizing of moving
parts can occur.
