Braycote® Vacuum Greases

New product designations of "EF" for "environmentally friendly"

Some of the original Braycote greases were formulated using a slurry of the PTFE thickener particles in a Freon® fluid which was then blended with the appropriate base oil.

However, in the early 1990's, when this particular Freon product was banned, the manufacturing was changed so that formulation was done with the PTFE thickener in a dry particle form (instead of in a Freon slurry). In order to keep clear whether a particular product was produced before or after the switch, the "EF" suffix was attached to the product designation. Hence, for example, if the original product was Braycote 600, the new reformulated product became Braycote 600EF.

Anyone who was using the original formulation (for example, Braycote 600) would want to know how "different" is the reformulated product, Braycote 600EF.

In actuality the two products are essentially the same. The PTFE thickener particles are the same and the base oil is the same. To the degree that there is a difference, it would be in the percentage of base oil present, with there being about 2-5% less, depending on batch-to-batch variation, in the reformulated product, for example, 601EF than in 600.

We have had many customers test the new environmentally friendly (e.g. the "EF") formulation and to the best of our knowledge, have found no difference in properties. These customers have approved the EF formulation for use as a direct replacement for the original lubricant without requiring further qualification.

Note: No two customer applications are the same and there is always the possibility that for a particular application, the reformulated product might not be as good as the original formulation. Hence for critical applications, only our customer can make the final decision as to whether the EF formulation is or is not going to be acceptable. Only our customers can determine whether additional testing is necessary or not. SPI Supplies can not be in the position of making this kind of decision for our customers.
