Apiezon® Greases
Refractive index values
Refractive index values are not presently available for the Apiezon greases.
For many years, as the greases were used exclusively for their originally
formulated purposes, the question never even came up. But in recent years,
as researchers seek to solve vacuum and lubricant problems through their
choice of greases, and as an increasing greater number of researchers are
attempting to do experiments in optical physics, there have been questions
asked about refractive index values.
We do have refractive index information for the Apiezon oils and they are
all in the 1.47 to 1.48 range.
For those requiring a higher refractive index , the base oil of
Santovac® 5 GB
grease is 1.63 at 25°C. The grease itself, in the bulk, is opaque. One normally
does not talk about the refractive index of an opaque material.
