We are sometimes asked about the suitability of the Apiezon greases for application as a contact grease in electrical power distribution equipment.
One common problem encountered by the power distribution people is a "drying out" of the grease with time, and it is our belief that this is probably due to the loss of volatile components in the original grease formulation.
Therefore, changing to a good, high quality vacuum grease should solve this particiular kind of problem.
Although the Apiezon greases are all good insulators, a thin film of a few µm on a contact carrying 11/33kV is not going to present an insulation problem with an electrical strength of say 800 volts/0.001" for the grease. The selection of the right grease will depend on the anticipated tempeature range of operation, remembering also that there may be additional heat produced by the electrical current.
