Characteristics of the PFTE coating system used for the SPI Supplies Brand of PTFE coated tweezers:
The high quality coating is applied as a solvent based liquid coating formulated with special blends of fluoropolymers specifically designed to improve abrasion resistance and toughness. PTFE is of course a soft polymer and it will eventually wear off, but what we have done is to build in resistance to the wear mechanism in order to impart a longer useful lifetime.
Nonstick:
Virtually no substances will permanently adhere to a PTFE surface. Although some tacky materials may show signs of adhesion, virtually all such substances release easily.
Low coefficient of friction:
The coefficient of friction of the PFTE coating used on the SPI Supplies Brand of PTFE coated tweezers is roughly 0.20 to 0.25, depending on the load and sliding speed.
Non-wetting:
Since surfaces coated with PTFE are both oleophobic and hydrophobic, they are not really wetted. Clean up is easier and more thorough, and in many case, the PTFE coated surface is self-cleaning.
Heat resistance:
Can be used continuously at temperatures up to 150°C and can be used for intermittent service up to 200°C.
Unique electrical properties:
Over a wide range of frequencies, PFTE has high dielectric strength, low dissipation factor and very high surface resistivity.
Cryogenic stability:
The PTFE coating used on the SPI Supplies brand of PTFE coated tweezers can withstand severe temperature extremes without loss of properties. The PTFE coated tweezers can be used as low as -270°C (454°F) without loss of properties.
Chemical resistance:
The PTFE used for the SPI Supplies brand of coated tweezers exhibits good chemical resistance and is unaffected by mild chemical environments. It may exhibit good resistance to dilute acids, diluted and concentrated alkalis, and virtually all commonly found organic solvents. These conditions are dependent on the length of exposure time, type of chemical and overall use. We make no claims that PTFE will be totally unaffected. For the coated high precision tweezers, there is a trade off between applying enough of a coating to protect the underlying metal vs. putting on too much and with an ensuing loss of sharpness of the tips. It is not unusual for there to exist a small population of small submicron pin-holes in the coating which then become sites of chemical attack of the substrate metal. But this is more a physical than a chemical failure of the PTFE coating.
