SPI Brushes
Brushes for Research, Teaching, and Art
One does not normally think about the hair being used on the brush to brush
dry powders onto a sample stage or SEM mount. But there are differences.
The differences might be fine and subtle, but for those doing the most
careful of work, the hair of construction of the brush is indeed important.
We normally recommend camel hair for the most delicate of work, especially
working with dry powders. The camel hair brushes come in a kit, three
different bristle sizes in each package. A lot of brushes in the world sold
as camel hair are not really made from camel hair. But the SPI camel hair
brushes are made in a brush factory in the far east where artistic
calligraphy is still practiced, and many of the best calligraphers still
prefer the hair of the camel for their best results. Therefore, that is the
only place in the world that still is manufacturing brushes made from the
hair of the camel.
Wolf and sable hair each have their own characteristics. For example for the
dry brushing of fragile diatoms, sable might be preferred. Fortunately, these
brushes are all low enough of cost that if in doubt, try both types.
One does not generally think that such differences in brushes could exist,
but indeed they do, as you too will see if you try more than one type.
