A few words about porcelain:
Porcelain is any claywork that has 0 to 1 percent absorption (of light). It is translucent when thin, and is generally white. Only the whitest and purest clays are used in the pure porcelain composition used for the production of the SPI Supplies mortar and pestle sets. It is fired at approximately 1315°C (2400°F) for one full day and remain in the kiln for approximately two days until properly cooled. Since clay is an alumino silicate, porcelain is also described as an alumino silicate. The porcelain used for the SPI porcelain labware is not pure Al2O3 but rather something like Al2SiO5.

This handy combination set has a place in every laboratory especially when one must powder up solid chunks or grains of metals or minerals for analysis. For the characterization of ground powders, be sure to consider SPI's Tacky Dot™ Slides.
