Mortar and Pestle Sets

Many laboratory works do not pay any attention to the composition of the mortar and pestle they are using to grind samples for analysis. But like other important things in life, mortar and pestle sets come in a variety of different materials of construction. One should not just use the one that has been used from time immemorial. Some thought should be given as to whether what is being used currently is indeed the "right" choice given the lower limits of detection possible with modern analytical instrumentation.

We are talking about trade-offs. Usually, the harder and more pure the material, the less contamination of the material being ground. And usually this also means a higher price.

Applications in the kitchen:

Find out why agate is preferred for applications in the kitchen.

What are the choices?

Porcelain is the softest, agate is very very hard (Mohs hardness of ~7) and zirconia is the hardest (Mohs hardness of ~ 10). Only diamond is harder than zirconia. While agate is quite fine for most demanding applications, there are yet some applications where something harder even than agate is needed. And that requirement would be met by zirconia.

No matter what might be your application, SPI has a mortar and pestle set solution. Note also that the "pestles" especially the smaller sizes, tend to get lost or otherwise disappear. Now you can purchasae replacement pestles for a reasonable price.
