The SPI "Two-in-One" OK Easy Duster has 11 full
oz. (312 g) of product, while some of our competitors are offering air duster cans containing as
little as 8 oz!
So be sure you are not comparing apples with oranges!
Take full advantage of the cost savings associated with the larger
size "fill". We recognize that the slightly higher pressure of 134a (the
product inside the can) can result in a few smaller puffs, but who would
want to substitute a
highly flammable product
in place of the non-flammable SPI product?
Some of the air duster products
on the market are indeed highly flammable and some are absolutely non-flammable.
The SPI "Two-in-One" OK Easy Duster is completely non-flammable
both in the liquid as well as gas state.
The propellant used in the SPI Two-In-One OK Easy Dusters is moisture free, and quadruple filtered.
The SPI Two
-In-One OK Easy Dusters have only slightly less the number of "puffs" than some
other and much more flammable compositions but
who would want to use a air duster that was highly flammable? For us to offer
any other type of duster would in our opinion be in exactly the wrong
direction in terms of looking out for our customer's well being. That is
why there is only one duster offered by SPI Supplies and that is why there
is no confusing selection of choices!
SPI customers no longer have to make a decision whether they will order
the SPI Easy Duster, with the built-in "straw" valve, or the SPI Duster refill,
which takes a more conventional screw on valve. And the reason is that now
you can have both products all in the same can! For those normal laboratory
applications where one must gently and with good control blow dust off of a
fragile sample to be studied, and when one or two gentle "puffs" are all that
is required, use the built-in "straw" valve. Indeed, regular use of the
built in straw valve results in much more economical use of the air duster
product, and a single duster can will last much longer. Some say two to
three times longer! However, for those situations where a more aggressive
"dusting" is called for, such as to blow out a Wehnelt assembly before
reassembly of the filament housing, attach a screw-on valve, and get the
needed "big blast" to ensure a dust-free environment.
The new
SPI #07605-AB "Two-in-One" Easy Duster comes in specially approved
cans and contains the US EPA (and other world government) approved
tetrafluoroethane,
CAS #811-97-2.
The SPI Supplies Brand of air dusters is filled exclusively with what is called
refrigerant "134a" (or R-134a). It is non-flammable. Period. It will not
burn. There are some vendors offering other products (e.g. "Formula S") on
the basis that they give a few more puffs. But such duster products are
filled with refrigerant "152a" or difluoroethane and which has been
described to us as having the potential to act like a "torch". We just
don't believe that it is worth a few extra puffs
to expose oneself to such a
flammability risk in a laboratory setting, given the probable existence of
other flammable materials as well.
Do not under any circumstances attempt to use the valves that worked on the
former products. However, the valves used for the immediate past generation
of air duster products, that is, the HCFC's can be used. The problem is that not
all manufacturers took the same precautions as were taken by SPI to ensure
that the wrong nozzle could not be put onto the wrong can. So if in doubt,
since safety here is the issue, we would urge an error on the side of being
too conservative and just purchase a new valve. However, if your valves were
purchased from SPI originally and do fit on these new cans, then everything
should be OK. Putting it another way, the valves that were suitable for use
with the HCFC's are also suitable for use with the new HFC material, sometimes
known as "134a". If in doubt, look to make sure that your valves are suitable
for use with tetrafluoroethane (see above CAS number). Note that the required
duster nozzle comes complete just by itself and without any filter assembly
or flexible extension nozzle.

So the point is for those of our customers who still prefer the "traditional"
air duster, with a screw-on type valve, there is the possibility of having the
familiar big strong "blast" for maximum cleaning force.
And for our customers who want to be both gentle around a delicate sample and
also, looking for ways to reduce costs and extend the useful life time of a
air duster can, use with confidence the built-in valve with the "straw" nozzle.
But remember, there is still more! You are getting an outstanding
duster product that can be used the way you want to use it, not the way some
one tells you must use it. You are getting more usable product for
your money than just about any place else also! So even if the price of
the SPI Two-in-One OK Easy Duster is a little higher than somewhere else,
just remember that from SPI, you are getting 10% more if comparing a 10 oz
product and a whopping 37% more if comparing an 8 oz product!
Who ever said you can't have it both ways when using SPI products?
The
SPI Spray Maker™ Duster Valve
which can also be used with the SPI Supplies brand of dusters, permits the
user to create an aerosol of droplets which can be collected on a glass
slide. This is especially useful for anyone studying nanostructures in
suspension.
Before using, make certain you understand the dangers associated with this
potentially dangerous product, because after all, it is a gas under pressure,
and must be treated with the same respect as would any typical aerosol product.
Use only after becoming familiar with the
SPI Two-in-One Duster's Instructions for Use.
