For many classroom and teaching applications, one does not need the
large single crystal NaCl
that is needed for the conduct of fine scientific research.
When our production facility produces (by cleaving) the large single crystals
that are used by researchers, a reasonable amount of "scrap" or "off-cuts" are
created. They really do have limited application for those conducting fine
scientific research into the structure of thin film coatings and the epitaxial
growth of materials on crystalline substrates. But for many classroom
applications, these "off-cuts" are just fine, not to mention the much lower
price.
These "off-cuts" are of the same high quality NaCl as are the larger research
grade single crystals, however they are in smaller pieces. Yet they are
certainly large enough to demonstrate the cleaving characteristics of ionic salt
crystals and they are also large enough to demonstrate certain dissolution
experiments (e.g. development of etch pits).
