Introduction:
SPI Supplies has been successfully manufacturing and distributing silicon nitride membrane window grids, both perforated and unperforated.

Over the past few years we have had a number of requests for silicon oxide (SiO2) membrane window grids, both perforated and unperforated. Unfortunately, the compressive stresses present in the oxide layers result in an uncontrollable wrinking effect. We have been working on the solution to the wrinkling, and we are continually making improvements. Our most recent efforts to solve the wrinking problem are shown in on this URL

We now offer as part of our StudenTek quality line of products the remaining stock from the previous generation of product.

Flatness of the membranes:
Put bluntly, these membranes do not have the flatness, at least not presently, as do the silicon nitride counterparts.

However when viewed on the scale of the holes, the membranes at least appear to be flat. We can state however, that you can consider the observed waviness to be a "worst case scenario". At higher magnification on the scale of the holes, the membrane does have at least the appearance of being flat. But just so we don't give anyone unrealistic expectations, note what we consider the worst case scenario as to the wrinkling of the membrane.


More on the waviness:
The aptitude of the "waves" is about 20 µm. There are certainly flat area on which one could concentrate their work.

General comments:
There really is nothing "wrong" with these perforated silicon oxide membrane window grids as researchers the world over have been using them for their experiments. While it is true we have had some comments about the wrinkling, we are unaware of anyone who has even come this close to creating a wrinkle-free silicon oxide membrane window.

In any case, we are offering the remaining stock of the previous generation of the product at a greatly reduced price. When our present stock is gone, there will be no more of this particular production and pattern.
