High quality HOPG at affordable student prices

We have selected special HOPG material for our Studen-Tek section that for one reason or another, could not be sold as our "standard" commercial products. The student customer can benefit from this by way of savings of 50% from the lowest price "regular" grade, our SPI-1 HOPG material.

Some commonly asked questions:

Q: Will I notice any "real" difference relative to the SPI-3 Grade?
A: Maybe yes, maybe no. It all depends on just what it was that caused your particular "block" to have been selected to be reborn as Studen-Tek.

Q: For teaching purposes, for a demonstration of cleaving, will there be any difference?
A: In general, the Studen-Tek quality HOPG should be just fine for any kind of general demonstrations of the micaceous type cleavage properties and characteristics.

Q: What would be an example of the kind of differences I might expect to see?
A: Probably the main difference would be in terms of a slight reduction in the number of cleavings possible per block, that because of the defect structure, the cleaving results in slightly thicker strips being taken off per each cleaving.

Q: Can I use the Studen-Tek quality as a substrate for AFM or other SPM studies?
A: Of course! However, the lattice won't be a regular as SPI-2 and SPI-1 grades, but won't be much different from SPI-3 grade.

Q: Can I use the Studen-Tek quality HOPG as a substrate for thin film coating research studies?
A: Maybe. We don't advise using the Studen-Tek quality for really serious studies mainly because we can not guarantee the precise reproducibility of the material, purchase after purchase. However, if you do plan to do this at the very least we recommend first comparing the results obtained using some SPI-2 or even SPI-1 material vs. the Studen-Tek material. For serious research studies, we recommend use of SPI-2 or SPI-3 grades.
