Our "pet" complaint about some SEM data on rough surfaces is that much information was "lost" because the microscopy was not done as stereo pairs. Even certain TEM data, especially on freeze fracture results or ordinary replica samples more often than not would benefit with even just a limited amount of stereo information of the type that can be obtained only via the examination of stereo pairs.

There is quite a range in prices one can pay for a stereo scope, but in this case, one truly gets what they pay for. An inexpensive viewer will enable one only to examine an area smaller than a 4x5" micrograph and because of the low quality optics, the final image will not even be that sharp.

With in the context of a $150,000 or more SEM laboratory set up, we do not believe this is the place to be economical!

The stereoscope offered by SPI Supplies is just about as high a quality as money can buy. The aluminum body stands on four folding legs with open to a 10" (25.4 cm) base. The all important optical components include first surface mirrors, 45° prisms free of any sign of color fringe and two lenses of approximately 11.5" (29.2 cm) focal length, providing a viewing field of 5" (12.7 cm) x 7" (17.8 cm). A precision crafted carrying case includes room for the optional 4X binocular attachment. Unfortunately the 4X option is not presently available and is temporarily out of production.
