SPI Aluminum-Tungsten
"Image Performance Checker"
Further Information of Interest
The SPI # 02911-AB Aluminum/Tungsten Dendrite Resolution Reference Sample
is prepared by the controlled solidification of a molten aluminum/tungsten
alloy. The solidified sample is literally "broken open" to expose the
dendrites. At low magnification, under a stereo zoom microscope, for
example, the fracture surface appears to consist of reflective crystal
facets. At slightly higher magnification, some of these facets have an
area of "haze." At normal working magnifications, "haze" is seen to have
a structure which resolves at high magnifications into the tree-like
structure of the dendrites themselves. The diameter of the individual
branches of the dendrite structure, and their spacing, are both
approximately 200nm. The dimension is not precise enough to determine
magnification, but the crispness of the image obtained can be compared
with that of images obtained at other times to determine whether
instrument resolution is being maintained.
The SPI Aluminum-Tungsten Image Performance Checker mount is perhaps the
most widely used in the world today as a means of quickly and without any
great loss of time, to validate the performance level of an SEM. Those
who use it are happy with the low price, and of course, the longevity of
the product. We know that nothing is forever, but in the case of this
product, you can be sure that the mount will outlast most instruments.
