This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated synthetic thallium bromide/iodide crystal.
The identifying etched label, which is a feature
of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
Thallium
is a rare heavy metal which oxidizes badly in the native state;
bromine and iodine are volatile halides, also impossible to mount
in the elemental state. This special synthetic material gives an
excellent standard for all three elements in a robust stable form.
