This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated synthetic rutile (titanium oxide) crystal. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Because titanium is such a common element in rock-forming minerals, we have provided several standards with varying amounts of this element, this having the most. The name is from the Latin rutilus, meaning golden red, referring to the color of the natural material. This, being synthetic, and of high purity, is colorless.
