This is a reflected light micrograph of a synthetic, polished, carbon coated magnesium oxide crystal. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. This is a good standard for high concentrations of Mg, particularly in oxide or silicate matrices, and also a good oxygen standard. The pure element oxidizes easily, whereas in this form it is extremely stable with a good surface.
