This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated marcasite crystals.
The identifying etched label, which is a feature
of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
Identical in
composition to the more familiar mineral pyrite, marcasite is formed at low
temperatures and is therefore more pure. Pyrite is to sulfides as quartz is to
silicates - the most common - and therefore its composition is an essential part of
any mineral standard set.
