This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated crocoite crystals.
The identifying etched label, which is a feature
of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
This is a useful standard for both
lead and chromium. Metallic lead is very soft and therefore
difficult to polish, and galena (PbS), has the problem that the X-
ray lines for Pb Ma and S Ka overlap in an EDS system. It is in
short supply, hence the small (but adequate) number of crystals in
the mount. It is a brilliant orange color as can be seen in the
NE of the mount.
