This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated cinnabar crystal.
The identifying etched label, which is a feature
of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
This is only naturally
occurring compound of mercury. Because mercury is a liquid at normal temperatures
the pure element cannot easily be used as a standard, so cinnabar is valuable. It is a
brilliant red color as can be seen in the image of the mount at the extreme right.
