This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated albite crystal.
The identifying etched label, which is a feature
of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
Albite is the sodium rich member of the plagioclase felspars and is a useful
standard for felspars and other aluminosilicates. The sodium shows a
tendency to migrate under high beam currents, so caution is advised.
The name refers to its white color (Latin - albus).
