This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated ruthenium. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Ruthenium is not normally available in a form suitable for mounting and polishing, but we have developed a technique which solves this problem.
