This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated vitreous carbon.
The identifying etched label, which is a feature
of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
Formerly we used graphite as the carbon standard, but vitreous carbon, which is harder and less porous, is now the preferred material.
