This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated selenium. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Selenium is brittle and fractures during polishing, often breaking away at the edges of a grain, as in this case. Fortunately sufficient remains in the center.
