This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated synthetic boron nitride crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. This BN, of the so-called "pyrolitic" variety, is a popular standard for light element analysis. As can be seen the crystals are large and take a good polish.
