This very useful set consists of two cross grating metal replicas, mounted on two SEM mounts of your choice with repeat distances in two orthogonal directions of 19.7 and 2160 lines per mm. The gratings are individually checked by SEM calibrated with NIST traceable standards to be within 1% of stated values and with a usable area of approximately 60mm2. Each SIRA Specimen Set is accompanied with complete use instructions.

The SIRA calibration set can be used to calibrate:

  • Magnifications from 20X and up
  • Image distortion
  • Specimen stage tilt control
  • Extent of depth of field

    Useful lifetime of the SIRA mount set:
    The SIRA mount sets can last for many years if kept in a clean, dry environment away from environments that will oxidize aluminum or silver. If exposed to normal moisture for a prolonged period of time, one can expect the coating to oxidize.

    Possibilities of cleaning the mount:
    Except for the use of an SPI Two-In-One™ Easy Duster or equivalent product, there is not reliable alternative way for cleaning.

    Certified and calibrated forms of the product:
    The normal form of the product involves measurements made on instrumentation calibrated with NIST traceable standards. This is the lowest cost form of the product and the one selected by 80% of our customers. But those customers who are having their laboratories accredited to some ISO standard (e.g. ISO 17025), may wish to have a "higher level" kind of certainty about their magnification standard and therefore we offer two additional options:
    Certified:
    In this case, a further set of measurements to confirm the reported spacings are made in a UK based laboratory using a laser beam interferometer. Certification of individual specimens is guaranteed to an accuracy of 1% and the product is provided with full documentation and a certificate from the laboratory doing the measurements and testing.

    Calibrated:
    This is the highest level the product is offered since each specific SIRA mount is measured by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK. This is the form of the product that should be purchased by anyone requiring their standard sample to have direct traceability to a recognized national standards organization.

    Is the certification or calibration really necessary? We believe this is a very private kind of question, something between you and your laboratory's quality assessor. Clearly the certification or calibration does add substantially to the cost, but on the other hand, if this is what is needed, then the SIRA mounts would make an excellent choice for an internal calibration standard.
