Low contrast makes regular resolution test specimens difficult to use because
the features are difficult, sometimes impossible, to see. A thick layer of
evaporated gold makes this HVEM standard much easier to view. The gold
(grids are coated with a layer of evaporated gold) forms crystallites which
are then result in greater contrast when checking performance at a variety
of different levels of accelerating voltage. Supplied on a standard 3.05mm
200 mesh grid.
