Routine maintenance instructions for SPI Supplies Standards for Microanalysis

If it should become necessary to polish the surface of a microanalysis standard manufactured by SPI Supplies, then this may be done, but only by very carefully and lightly buffing with a soft cloth. Kleenex tissue may occasionally produce scratches, so be careful! SPI Supplies "SPI Wipes™" lint free cotton wipers would be the best. It is soft, non-abrasive, and gentle to the surface. Do you use wipes such as "Kleenex" which would contain abrasive particles and damage the mount's surface ? A fine metal polish such as Pol® or Wenol® may be applied at this point, but the oily residue should be removed by solvent before carbon coating.

The electron beam applied labels will survive through two or three of these light repolishing processes, but can be enhanced by the carbon coating procedure described below. Carbon coating, if applied correctly, will in fact survive light buffing. Important note: Faraday cups should be removed during polishing to prevent the aperture from becoming contaminated.
