This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated synthetic sphalerite crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
Sphalerite contains variable amounts of iron, and is usually compositionally zoned. For this reason we have opted to use synthetic material for a standard for zinc in the sulfide state. The name is from the Greek sphaleros, meaning treacherous, in
reference to it being confused with more easily smelted ores. It is also known as zinc blende.
