This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated synthetic boron nitride crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
This BN, of the so-called "pyrolitic" variety, is a popular standard for light element analysis. As can be seen the crystals are large and take a good polish.
The BKą X-ray is too low in energy to be seen on most EDS detectors, though the NKą line can just be seen in the EDS spectrum above.
