This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated skutterudite crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
This standard contains major amounts of cobalt, nickel and arsenic and is therefore useful when studying sulfide minerals. We used to use cobaltite in this position, but experienced difficulty maintaining the quality. As can be seen from the table of
compositional data, we are attempting to estimate the errors in the analysis, and this should eventually be extended to all items. It is named after the town of Skutterud in Norway.
