Benitoite

BaTiSi3O9

Element% Oxide% benitoite
O 34.83 This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated benitoite crystal. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Benitoite is a gem mineral which gives a beautiful blue cathodoluminescence in the electron beam, thus making the spot clearly visible in an optical microscope. As a standard for Ba and Ti it is compromised by the proximity of the X-ray lines Ba Lα and Ti Kα (4.47 and 4.51 keV respectively). Its name comes from the type locality for this mineral in San Benito County, California.
