This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated hafnium wire. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument.
Hf and Zr are chemically very similar and always occur together in nature. Zr is more abundant and therefore can be purified, but refined Hf always contains a small but significant amount of Zr, in this case about 3.1%.
