This is a reflected light micrograph of polished, carbon coated pyrite crystals. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Pyrite is to sulfides as quartz is to silicates - the most common - and therefore its composition is an essential part of any mineral standard set.
