This particular mineral is known familiarly as "Amelia Albite" because of its provenance near the Amelia County Court House, Virginia, USA. It is well characterised and is used widely as a microanalytical standard.

This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated albite crystal. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Albite is the sodium rich member of the plagioclase felspars and is a useful standard for felspars and other aluminosilicates. The sodium shows a tendency to migrate under high beam currents, so caution is advised. The name refers to its white color (Latin - albus).
