This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated spodumene crystal. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. This is the only
standard in the set containing a major amount of lithium, which, although it is too light to produce useful X-rays for analysis, may be of value in ion beam analysis. This makes it a "standard
of omission" whose composition cannot be determined completely by X-ray spectroscopy, but is still valuable for comparison with unknowns. It is a gem quality material from the Minas Gerais pegmatite.
