This is a reflected light micrograph of a polished, carbon coated pentlandite crystal. The identifying etched label, which is a feature of our standards, is invaluable for navigating in an electron beam instrument. Pentlandite is the mineral making up most of the nickel ores in such deposits as occur in the district around Sudbury, Ontario. This is the standard for Ni and Fe in sulfides. Named after Joseph Pentland who first noticed the mineral in the Sudbury ores.
