Routine maintenance instructions for SPI Supplies Standards for Microanalysis
If it should become necessary to polish the surface of a
microanalysis standard manufactured by SPI Supplies, then this may be done,
but only by very carefully and lightly buffing with a soft cloth. Kleenex® tissue may occasionally produce scratches, so be careful! SPI
Supplies "SPI Wipes" lint free cotton wipers would be the best. It is soft, non-abrasive, and gentle to the
surface. Do you use wipes such as "Kleenex" which would contain abrasive particles and damage the mount's
surface? A fine metal polish such as Pol®, Wenol® or the fine metal paste PIKAL® may be applied at this point, but the oily residue
should be removed by solvent before carbon coating.
The electron beam applied labels will survive through two or three of these light repolishing processes,
but can be enhanced by the carbon coating procedure described below. Carbon coating, if applied
correctly, will in fact survive light buffing. Important note: Faraday cups should be removed during
polishing to prevent the aperature from becoming contaminated.
Refurbishing service available for standards:
And remember that only SPI Supplies offers a low cost refurbishing service
for all SPI Supplies standards, products of the Charles M. Taylor Company
and certain other of the other standards manufacturing firms.
If you have other questions to ask about the refurbishing service, or
if you should have a standard that was manufactured by one of our
competitors, even those no longer in business, please let us know what you have and we will try our best to get back to you within two business days
with an appropriate reply. However, we can not refurbish standards from
certain of our competitors because the standard items are not sufficiently
strongly held in the mount so that the individual standard items don't fall
out during the reprocessing.
