The SPI Supplies^® Brand of ring mounts are available in either metal or phenolic with nominal diameters of 1 1/4" (3.2 cm) or 1 1/2" (3.8 cm). The size that should be selected is really more a matter of personal choice and preference, sometimes influenced by the equipment being used for the preparation. In general, larger mounts are easier to handle (up to the point where they are too large to hold comfortably) but they are also slower to prepare. So it is really a matter of "trade offs" and one has to decide which is more important for them.
